Car ownership remains in demand
The current AutoScout24 trend survey shows what car ownership and frequency of use will look like in 10 years.

Car ownership remains in demand
According to local car owners, the car-free future is not yet within reach. For a current trend study, Integral market and opinion research surveyed a total of 500 Austrian car owners between the ages of 18 and 69 online for AutoScout24 in January 2022, representative of this target group. Result: 89 percent of those surveyed expect to still own a car in 10 years. Those who view driving as personal freedom are above average. Even frequent drivers, i.e. people who drive more than 10,000 km per year, cannot imagine a future without a car as well as the rest of Austrians. And 30-49 year olds are also more attached to cars than the average person: 94 percent are sure that they will own a set of wheels in 10 years.
Even if owning a car will still be important in the future, mobility behavior will change, according to the survey. Only 12 percent of those surveyed expect to travel by car more in 10 years than they do today. In contrast, however, a quarter expect the use of their own car to decrease. When asked about the use of alternative means of transport in a decade, it becomes clear that public transport and cycling in particular have a lot of potential. More than a third (35 percent) say they will be traveling in public more in 10 years. At least 31 percent see themselves on the bike more. The combination of different means of transport will also become more important. This so-called multi-modal use of transport has a future for 28 percent. According to the survey, walking is also becoming more modern again: 22 percent think they will cover more distances on foot in 10 years. E-scooters, on the other hand, are not a real alternative for those surveyed. 16 percent think they will use them more in the future. However, 38 percent of them want to use electric scooters less in 10 years.
