ARBÖ summer tire test: Good results, surprisingly cheap winners
This year's summer tire test delivered a pleasing result: all nine tires scored “highly recommended” or at least “recommended”.

ARBÖ summer tire test: Good results, surprisingly cheap winners
Together with its German test partners ACE Auto Club Europa and the GTÜ Society for Technical Monitoring, ARBÖ compared nine summer tires in the 225/45 R 17 format with the Golf VIII as a test vehicle. The tire size under scrutiny is suitable for compact and mid-range cars, such as Audi A3, BMW 1, 2, 3 series, Honda Civic, Mercedes A, B, C Class, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308, Seat Leon, Toyota Corolla or VW Golf. The nine tested tires were sent into the race by well-known tire manufacturers and, in keeping with the positive outcome of the test, there are two third places and two winners this year: The Michelin Primacy 4 and the Nexen N'fera Sport SU2 share first place with a total number of points of 138 and can therefore wear the winner's label.
The two winners are particularly convincing in the “Dry Safety” chapter, while there are tires that perform better in the “Wet Safety” category. The Falken Azenis FK510 in particular delivers top results on wet surfaces, but on dry roads and in the “environmental/economic efficiency” category it is not quite enough to achieve a top position, which means third place in the final results. The Falken shares this with the Nokian Wetproof, which delivers solid top values in all chapters.
It is striking that the ARBÖ's current summer tire test has produced a budget-friendly top group: The test winner Nexen N'fera Sport SU2 is one of the cheaper tires of the nine test candidates, and this also applies to the two third-placed tires.
Unrestrictedly suitable: The Magnificent Four
All four tires are fully suitable and achieve an overall rating of “highly recommended”. But the second part of the test field also impressed the testers. With 133 points, the Continental Premium Contact 6 is in fifth place and is one of the best in the field, especially on wet roads. One point behind is the Maxxis Premitra 5, which has problems braking on wet roads, but performs well in aquaplaning. On dry ground and in terms of economy, the Maxxis can't quite keep up with the very best. In the middle of the field in seventh place is the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2, which performs well everywhere but does not stand out in any category.
Eighth and ninth place go to the BF Goodrich Advantage and the Laufenn S Fit EQ+. All of these tires are rated "recommended", which Erich Groiss, technical coordinator of the ARBÖ, is particularly pleased about: "We can recommend all, and indeed all, of the tires tested this year. This year's test field is extremely close together. The last place from the first two places in the final calculation is separated by just twelve points. The tires only perform better or less better in nuances. Overall, a very pleasing result."
