ARBÖ: Summer tire test 2020

The big names in the tire industry are not only well-known, but as premium manufacturers they also deliver the corresponding quality. But there are also a number of not so well-known brands, often so-called “secondary brands” from the big, well-known names. The ARBÖ, together with its German partner clubs ACE and GTÜ, installed exactly these tires on an Audi Q2 during this year's summer tire test and tested them on the Bridgestone site in Italy. Basically it can be said that all tires tested work quite well on dry roads. All rubbers tested this year are convincing; the differences between the individual brands are extremely small. There are only subtle nuances that distinguish the winner of the “Safety Dry” category from the others.

The top group consists of Maxxis Premitra HP5, Sava Intensa UHP2, Hankook Ventus Prime 3, Fulda SportControl 2 and Kleber Dynaxer HP4. They all offer good steering behavior, hardly understeer and impress with good grip even in the technically demanding sections of the route. Apollo Aspire XP, Firestone Roadhawk, Toyo Proxes Sport and Avon ZV7 are behind them, but these tires also still have satisfactory cornering stability and offer sufficient reserves at the limit.

In everyday life on dry roads, all tires are absolutely competitive. The situation is different in the chapter “Wet safety”. There reveal themselves at the Hankook, Avon
and Firestone real weaknesses, especially the grip in the “circular track wet” category leaves a lot to be desired. Kleber and Apollo, who are 45, are doing better
or 51 total points in the middle of the field. Fortunately, there are also tires that handle the tasks on wet roads very well. The Fulda and the Maxxis cope best with the wet ground. But the Sava and the Toyo, both of which achieve 56 points, also have such road conditions.

Overall, the test shows that the Maxxis is a worthy test winner with 136 total points, allowing you to drive well and safely on all road conditions. But also that
Fulda and Sava achieve a “recommended” rating. The conclusions of all other candidates are modest to negative. Especially on wet roads – in Austria
But the road conditions often reveal their weaknesses.
