ARBÖ: Relief package not sufficient

The government has responded to the high energy costs with a relief package. However, this is definitely criticized from many quarters. The ARBÖ also only finds limited words of praise.

The increases in the commuter allowance and the commuter euro are important steps to relieve the burden on people in Austria, according to a statement from the motorists' association. "Everyone who has to travel longer distances to work and has no alternative in the form of public transport is currently facing particular financial burdens. Therefore, the measures for commuters can be viewed positively." After all, with a gross wage of 3,000 euros and entitlement to the large commuter allowance, the tax savings amount to around 60 euros per month.

Nevertheless, the relief package for the ARBÖ does not go far enough. All Austrians who are not commuters but who still rely on the car in everyday life are forgotten. “Pensioners, but also families who live in rural areas and are dependent on their own car for everyday journeys due to the lack of public transport, are completely left out,” criticizes the ARBÖ Secretary General. Gerald Kumnig.

The ARBÖ therefore continues to call for a reduction in mineral oil tax and a price cap for fuel. "It is easy - at least temporarily - to reduce the mineral oil tax and VAT. That would be helpful and relieve the burden on people now, and not in a few weeks or months. We are also demanding that the CO2 pricing planned from July be postponed," said Kumnig.
