25 million engines from Steyr
Historical milestone at the BMW Group plant in Steyr: 25 million engines produced. But that's not even the highlight.

25 million engines from Steyr
In 1982 the first engine was produced at the BMW Group plant in Steyr. It is now the BMW Group's largest engine plant in the world. 39 years after the start of series production, the 25 millionth engine rolled off the assembly line.
The numbers prove the importance of the location: Last year, the 4,400 employees at the BMW Group plant in Steyr produced around one million engines, of which 40 percent were diesel and 60 percent were gasoline engines. In engine assembly, 3-, 4- and 6-cylinder engines are manufactured. Around a quarter of all combustion engines for plug-in hybrids from the BMW and Mini brands come from Steyr.
Incredible: At peak times, 5,500 engines are manufactured per day at the Steyr plant.
"Combustion engine technology will continue to play an important role at the Steyr plant. With the relocation of production volumes from the BMW plant in Munich, the importance of the location will be strengthened even further," explains Alexander Susanek, Managing Director of the BMW Group Plant Steyr. In November last year, the BMW Group announced the relocation of its Munich engine production facility, thereby concentrating its European production of combustion engines at the Steyr and Hams Hall (Great Britain) locations by 2024 at the latest. The investments also underline the importance of the internal combustion engine for the Steyr plant: In autumn 2020, the company built a new line for the production of petrol and hybrid engines using a three-digit million sum.
