Anton van Zanten was awarded the European Inventor Award 2016 in the Lifetime Achievement category by the European Patent Office in Lisbon for his invention of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The Dutch native developed the anti-skid system during his more than 25-year career at Bosch as head of a 35-person research group.
The Mercedes-Benz S600 went into series production for the first time in 1995. “Anton van Zanten and his developer colleagues are the guardian angels of many drivers,” said Volkmar Denner, CEO of Robert Bosch GmbH, not only honoring the award winner, but also the team effort. To date, ESP has saved more than 8,500 people's lives and prevented more than a quarter of a million traffic accidents in Europe alone. This makes anti-skid protection the most important safety system in the car after the seat belt and before the airbag.
